North Branch’s Murphy and Rodriguez advance to regional championships

North Branch’s Hunter Murphy, shown here against Capac Dec. 6, won the district championship at 145 lbs. on Feb. 10.GOODRICH — Two North Branch wrestlers qualified for regionals on Saturday, Feb. 10, as Hunter Murphy at 145 won his weight class and Marcos Rodriguez at 215 finished fourth overall at the Div. 2 individual district at Goodrich. North Branch individuals competed against wrestlers from Armada, Auburn Hills-Avondale, Cros-Lex, Fenton, Goodrich, Holly, Imlay City, Linden, Marysville, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, Ortonville- Brandon, Pontiac, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep and St. Clair.

Murphy won the district championship in a 9-4 decision over Holly’s Carsen Cuthbert. Prior, Murphy won a 5-2 decision over Cros-Lex’s Vincent Scaramuzzi in the semifinals and won a 5-1 decision over Goodrich’s Carter Lauinger in the quarterfinals.

Rodriguez lost the third-place match by fall to St. Charles’ Derek White at 2:08. In the consolation semis, Rodriguez won a 3-2 decision over North Branch teammate Evan Caudill. Rodriguez was knocked out of the winner’s bracket by pin at 3:52 by Brandon’s Anthony Nicaj in the semifinals. Rodriguez also won a 6-3 decision over Cros-Lex’s Blake Falter in the quarterfinals.

Murphy and Rodriguez wrestled in the regional championship against the top four finishers from the Gaylord district at Gaylord High School on Saturday after press deadlines.
